CHMSU shortlisted in THE Awards Asia 2025; university’s entry highlights student’s research

The Times Higher Education shortlisted Carlos Hilado Memorial State University in the THE Awards Asia 2025 for the Research Project of the Year: STEM.

The shortlist was published by THE on January 21, 2025, CHMSU is the only school in the country shortlisted in this category joining eight other universities from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Turkiye.

THE is a global organization that provides information and rankings about universities worldwide, primarily known for its “World University Rankings” which assess universities based on their performance across teaching, research, international outlook, and knowledge transfer, considered one of the most authoritative sources for evaluating higher education institutions globally.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on April 22, 2025.

CHMSU’s entry to this year’s awards is a study by Ceejay Faala, a junior Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Science at the Binalbagan Campus, entitled “Learning with Innovated Microscope: Addressing Instrument Gap in Biology Class,” according to the Quality Management Office.

In his study, Faala came up with a pen-sized digital microscope called the “Pencroscope” which uses recycled materials.

The secondary education student was guided by his research adviser Alberto Dela Cruz.

The patent for the pencrosope is currently pending, said the Intellectual Property Management Office, the unit at the university that assisted Faala in preparing the documents for his invention.
