Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU), through its Gender and Development Office, hosted a full-day Gender Awareness and Sensitivity Training on April 10 for newly hired faculty, staff, and Filipino teachers.
The event took place at the Audio Visual Room in the Talisay Campus. Resource speaker Marie June Castro facilitated discussions on foundational gender concepts, including the differences between sex and gender, the roles assigned by society, and how socialization influences gender perceptions.
“This training equips our educators with a critical understanding of gender dynamics in academic settings,” said Elvie Samson, director of the university’s Gender and Development Office, who introduced Castro at the start of the program.

Methuselah Daba-ay, Gender and Development coordinator from the Alijis campus, opened the event with welcome remarks. Andrew Eusebio Tan, vice president for research and extension, delivered a message underscoring the university’s commitment to inclusive education.
Afternoon sessions focused on the gender journey, the role of women in contemporary society, identifying gender bias, and promoting gender-equitable practices. The training ended with a synthesis on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE), followed by evaluation and closing remarks led by Rose Regala, Gender and Development coordinator from the Binalbagan campus.
This initiative is part of CHMSU’s continuing efforts to cultivate an inclusive academic environment that values diversity and upholds equality.
