Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU) is proud to announce the release of “Sa Hapag,” a bilingual illustrated children’s book authored by faculty members Rolando Jr. Peralta and Cynthia Buga-ay of the College of Education.
The book is a heartfelt contribution to the university’s growing portfolio of educational resources that champion cultural understanding and global awareness among young readers.

Brought into life by the art of Dawn Shane Bernadas, “Sa Hapag” follows the story of a curious child named Esteban as he discovers how different cultures shape and influence the food we eat. Through engaging illustrations and accessible bilingual text, the book invites children to explore the world at the dinner table—transforming an everyday experience into a doorway for learning about diversity, heritage, and connection.
The book reflects CHMSU’s continuing commitment to internationalization, weaving lessons on multiculturalism into a format that is both entertaining and meaningful for young learners. By grounding complex ideas about cultural diversity in a relatable, family-centered narrative, Peralta and Buga-ay have created a resource that resonates with children while reinforcing values of respect and openness to the world.
As part of its rollout, “Sa Hapag” will be piloted in schools under the Department of Education (DepEd), Schools Division of Cadiz City, Negros Island Region. This pilot phase will allow educators to integrate the book into classroom instruction and gather insights on its impact on young readers.
The College of Education, in partnership with CHMSU’s Research and Development Services Office, is offering free collaboration opportunities to public elementary and secondary schools interested in joining this initiative. Schools that wish to participate are encouraged to reach out and become part of this growing effort to bring culturally enriching literature into classrooms.
