In solidarity with environmental causes, CHMSU – University Student Government (C-USG) officers from the Talisay Campus participated in the celebration of World Environment Day held on June 5, 2024, at the Iloilo Science and Technology University in Iloilo City.
The participants, Gerald Guevarra, Genrick Catalonia, Neil Kevin Natabio, Chrisha Joy Natividad, and Shaina Magbanua, were accompanied by C-USG adviser Rollie Caudellosa.
The program’s highlight featured an environmental talk, during which Marinel Ubaldo, co-founder of the Youth Leaders for Environmental Action Federation, discussed the effects of climate change at the local and global levels. Her lecture was followed by an enriching discussion on the circular economy and social enterprise led by Krishia Pauline Ellis, CEO and co-founder of Salin PH.
In the latter part of the event, different groups presented their proposed innovations aimed at addressing environment-related issues in their universities, anchored in the UN’s sustainable development goals.
Guevarra thanked ISAT-U for spearheading the collaborative event and emphasized that the learnings gained from the activity must be echoed at the participants’ respective universities. He also presented CHMSU’s GREENing policy and underscored one of its salient features, which is the prohibition of single-use plastics, plastic straws, styrofoam, and balloons within the campus premises.
The event marks the beginning of more collaborative partnerships for the environment among student organizations in the future. (by Neil Kevin Natabio)
