Key officials, directors, deans, and program chairpersons of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU) discussed internationalization opportunities and strategies in a workshop held at the Talisay Campus Function Hall on April 12-13, 2023.
The Internationalization Orientation Seminar Workshop was the first of the many trainings the university has lined-up to equip its management and faculty in international mobility and collaboration.
The mandate to engage in internationalization programs is in line with the institution’s recent conversion to a university. Jay B. Estrellas, EdD, Vice President for Academic Affairs, cited that three of the Strategic Objectives for the Five-year Development Plan 2023-2028 are all targeted towards making the university a global institution.
In his message, President Norberto P. Mangulabnan, PhD highlighted the need to digitalize and expand the university’s services and operations and continue to strive for excellence. He mentioned the start of the university’s upgrade to full digitalization with what was coined as “CHMSU Digital Ecosystem” and charting CHMSU’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mangulabnan encouraged the participants to take on the global demands as one university. “No one alone can internationalize the school. We all have to be together in this mission, sharing the same vision and direction for CHMSU,” he said.
Rhoderick K. Samonte, Director for Internationalization and External Relations, said that the workshop will introduce the framework that will guide the university in its internationalization journey. While the university has already initiated different aspects of internationalization such as academic exchanges, internships abroad, and the integration of inter-cultural activities, Samonte emphasized the need to further accelerate the program and harmonize initiatives.
Three resource speakers were invited for the workshop. Atty. Lily Freida Milla, CESO IV, Director III of the Commission on Higher Education International Affairs Service (CHED IAS), joined virtually and discussed internationalization of HEI’s and modeling the IZN of CHMSU, Cleo Angeline Cachapero, CHED IAS Officer presented ASEAN initiatives as Priorities, and Ayessa Marie Velasquez, PhD Director for Academy of Lifelong Learning, Ateneo de Davao University shared the process and tips on Design Thinking and IZN.
