Social Science students discuss global issues in 1st Model United Nations at CHMSU

The third-year BA Social Science students of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University discussed pressing global issues during the first Model United Nations World Leaders Summit at the Function Hall, Talisay (Main) Campus on June 23, 2025.

Organized by the BASS 3A and 3B classes taking up the International Relations and Global Politics course under the BA in Social Science program of the College of Arts and Sciences, the event aimed to simulate UN proceedings while allowing students to immerse themselves in the high-level discussions on pressing global issues.

The first Model UN summit, in partnership with the Center for Internationalization and External Relations, is part of the course end-term requirements with CIER Director Rhoderick Samonte.

Among the issues discussed were the war between Ukraine and Russia, the armed conflict and violence in the Gaza Strip, and the acceleration of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The students simulating global leaders all agreed on supporting diplomacy and inclusive peace efforts in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.

The body also reaffirmed the obligation to protect civilians and uphold humanitarian laws through a resolution.

The delegates also agreed on a resolution reinforcing justice and accountability through an international mechanism to address the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip.

This includes establishing safe humanitarian corridors and ceasefire windows to allow the delivery of aid. The state representatives also arrived at a resolution to address key critical but lagging SDGs.

The resolution also supported the UN Secretary-General’s proposal for an SDG Stimulus, which prioritizes debt relief for the least developed countries.

The summit showcased the third-year social science students’ potential as future global leaders, preparing them for careers in diplomacy, politics, and international relations.
