CHMSU to host 2nd Model United Nations General Assembly

The College of Arts and Sciences of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU), through its Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Program, will hold the 2nd Model United Nations (MUN) General Assembly on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Function Hall, 3rd Floor, Green Building, CHMSU Talisay Main Campus.

Themed “UNbound: Reengineering the Global Order for People, Peace, and Planet,” the event is a full-day simulation of a United Nations General Assembly session designed to challenge students to think, speak, and negotiate as diplomats on the world stage.

The simulation serves as a final course requirement for third-year students enrolled in International Relations and Global Politics (IRNPOL) and Contemporary World (GECCON) classes with Director Rhoderick Samonte, and is conducted in collaboration with the Center for Internationalization and External Relations (CIER). The assembly is organized and presided over by the President and Secretary-General of the Model United Nations.

Beyond CHMSU’s own social science students, the event will draw youth participants and delegates from six partner institutions across the region: Bago City College, La Consolacion College, Libot Kalibutan-on (Sagay City), State University of Northern Negros, University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos, and the University of St. La Salle.

Their participation reflects the MUN’s growing reach as an inter-institutional platform for civic and diplomatic engagement among young people in Negros Occidental.

Through the simulation, delegates are expected to demonstrate and further develop key competencies including public speaking, negotiation, critical thinking, and diplomatic skills—essential qualities for students preparing to engage with the complex political, social, and environmental realities of the contemporary world.

The General Assembly will convene on three agenda items. First, delegates will nominate and elect a new Secretary-General for 2027 to lead the Model United Nations in the coming term. Second, they will deliberate on “Beyond 2030: Global Action Against Poverty, Wars, and Climate Crisis,” crafting resolutions that address the most pressing challenges facing humanity as the world moves beyond the Sustainable Development Goals framework. Third, delegates will take up “Reform from Within: Restructuring the United Nations Systems,” debating and proposing structural reforms aimed at strengthening the effectiveness, equity, and representation of the United Nations as a global institution.

The assembly coincides with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5. In recognition of this global occasion, the delegates of the General Assembly, led by the MUN President and Secretary-General, will plant a legacy tree on the CHMSU campus at 7:00 AM—a symbolic gesture of environmental responsibility and intergenerational commitment ahead of the day’s proceedings.

The 2nd MUN General Assembly underscores CHMSU’s commitment to experiential and values-driven education.

By immersing students in the mechanisms and challenges of international diplomacy, the university affirms its role in shaping graduates who are not only academically prepared but are also capable of contributing meaningfully to local and global conversations on peace, justice, and sustainable development.
