COED conducts seminar-workshop on ‘mentoring the mentor’

The College of Education of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University successfully conducted the seminar-workshop “Mentoring the Mentor” on March 2–3, 2026, at the Global Learning Café, Talisay (Main) Campus. 

Designed to equip participants with enhanced mentoring skills, the activity formed part of the college’s initiatives to advance SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). 

The seminar gathered faculty members and master teachers from the partner Department of Education schools from the Schools Divisions of Bacolod City, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental Province, Silay City, and Talisay City.

Led by Dean Ophelia Duayan, the two-day program featured lectures, hands-on workshops, and meaningful discussions under the theme “Cultivating Effective Mentorship for Excellence in Pre-service Education.” 

Sessions were facilitated by COED faculty, including Director Liezl May Tortogo of the Curriculum and Instructional Material Development Unit, who discussed mentor-mentee relationships and personal attributes

Internship Coordinator Norberto Parcon, tackled system requirements for effective mentorship; and Prof. Ma. Rosa Caraballe, Program Chairperson for the Master of Arts in Education major in English, led sessions on pedagogical knowledge and modeling and moderated the group reflection and open forum.

Prof. Jomeo Sumalapao, Program Chairperson for the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Science, shared insights on feedback mechanisms and mentoring tools, while Prof. Gertrudes Anastacia Lopez, Chairperson of the Bachelor of Physical Education program, discussed conflict resolution and leadership. She also facilitated the drafting of the mentorship action plan and feedback sessions.

The seminar-workshop concluded with participants collaboratively developing action plans to strengthen mentorship practices in their respective institutions, reaffirming CHMSU’s commitment to academic excellence, collaboration, and professional growth.
